Is punks finally dead?
Graphic copied from here. |
There was a time, believe it or not, when the declaration on the graphic above was a fairly common sight in Metro Manila. Enough that it was a minor nuisance, like jejemons are right now, I suppose. From t-shirt prints, to vandalisms on walls, to fake tattoos on prepubescent punkistas. Never mind that the declaration was total nonsense. It was popular. And so just about every lemming youth who wanted to be different -- like his peers, rode on the bandwagon. I wonder if these people ever learned the meaning of "irony"?
Where are they now? Did they grow up to become the guy whose job is to call passengers to fill up jeepneys? Did any of these punkistas ever make it as a bank executive? Are there call center agents now who ever wore a "punks not dead" t-shirt?
I have not seen a t-shirt, a vandalism, or a fake "punks not dead" tattoo in years. Is punks finally dead? Is it safe to declare that here now? Alright. Let me go out on a limb then.
Punks dead!
And one can only hope that jejemons would soon follow suit.
Punks dead!

PUNKS NOT DEAD, YOU BITCH!
ReplyDeleteSasampalin namin kau
Go vandalize something then. Oh what? Singapore is too strict?
ReplyDeleteAyos! May nag react, naka anonymous pa! Lol!
ReplyDeleteAyos lang sana kaso may bad word pang kasama. Kung magmumura ka lang sa net, mas maganda siguro kung wag ka na lang mag anonymous you piece a shit.
Actually, after years of searching, I found out that Punk is my most preferred listening.
Nung nauso hip-hop, hip-hop lahat. Nung nauso rap, rapper lahat, nung nauso ulit ang rock, rakista lahat. Eh nung nauso Jejemon, grabe, wag naman sana. :D
Bottomline, most (immature) girls go for whatever is in (fashionable) and guys simply go with what girls like para nga naman maka iskor. In the end, pare pareho lang silang coño.
"I am Punk and yes, I am Dead!!!"
XD
Nice one nozrath.
ReplyDeleteAs for me, gusto ko ng punk.
Digs?
Hey, konting clarification lang ha. I have nothing against PUNK music. First song I learned to play sa gitara pa nga e Boys Don't Cry ng The Cure, punk band yun di ba? Haha.
ReplyDeletePunks are the lesser forms of life that give way and shrink back when we walk through them.
ReplyDeleteNyahahahahahahahaha!
Avril Lavigne... Lmao!
Its getting pretty lame.
Sabi nga e, teenagers dress alike to be different.
ReplyDeleteThe Cure? Di ba siya yung mukhang Edward Scissorhands? (nice idea for a blog topic!)
ALL YOU HATERS OF PUNKS GO KISS MY ASS!!!
Lol!
ReplyDeleteBoss Neckro, I think that's right. Kaso di ako fan nila. I prefer Harder stuff. Anybody heard of Tres Machetes?
Anyway, dressing alike to be different, at any angle only proves they are just going with the flow. (Could I suggest a TNL rule that real men don't care about what's "in"?
What's considered weird and inappropriate years ago would have a great chance of being fashionable just because some video star starts using it. That's just lame. First of all, Video killed the Radio Star. (Not necessarily Punk but it makes sense to me.) Music Videos tend to make us forget what music really is. . . So I stopped watching Channel V. Lol!
@ nozrath - it's just like with clicques. some people would lie to get into the "in" group. and they take to heart the saying "when in rome, do what the romans do," forgetting the fact that they are not romans and they are not in rome. :)
ReplyDeleteWho was that comedian again who said "I don't want to join any club who would accept me as a member."
ReplyDeleteDon I have to research that one.
ReplyDeletebtw, if you have time, try to check out my new blog
http://halie-lifethewayiseeit.blogspot.com/
ReplyDelete@nozrath: i'm so happy i'm not the only one who cannot spell justin beiber's name correctly! btw, the above punkista dude corrected my biever spelling on facebook! ugh! i disown him now.

Just added your new blog to my blog roll Halie. :)
ReplyDeleteKL, yeah forward it by all means. And give them my fondest regards. Hehehe.... este... jejeje...
Goddess> Haha. I never realized the spelling was wrong. Not a fan anyway so it didn't really matter to me. Lol! :D
ReplyDeleteHalie> Kewl. I'll take a look later... That was the phrase! Anyway, do you find it amusing how locals keep dressing up in thick clothing just to be "in" while we are in a tropical country?
Teens are self mutilating just because they want to be called "Emo". For crying out loud, if one really wants to die, one slashes deeply into the wrists not lightly across the arms. lmao!
Maester Dondz> Sounds awfully familiar bit I can't seem to pin it down. It is a foreign or a local comedian?
Old foreign comedian. Bob Hope era I believe.
ReplyDeleteHell, i don't hate punksters, just feel sorry for them because they're pathetic.
ReplyDeleteBut in fairness, maybe we feel the same way our elders did when they'd look at us in the late sixties and early seventies: we were counter-culture with long hair, dirty torn denims and granny dresses for the girls, anti (Vietnam)-war, Bob Dylan and later Juan dela Cruz Band, plenty of dope (organic, yay!) peace, free love (yay!), make love not war (yay!), all that good stuff.
On second thought, naaaah. Punksters just look...dumb. LOL
@ donz - thanks for stopping by my newest addition.
ReplyDelete@ nozrath - yah know, i might write about that one day. teeners and emo fashion. don't you find it equally amusing and irritating when "badboys" wear leather jackets even though it's not just warm but HOT!
forgive me for hating those who jump in the bandwagon without really understanding what the bandwagon is all about.
@Don Dee and nozrath: Kung hindi si Rodney Dangerfield, si George Carlin.
ReplyDelete@Halie: Got curious about your blog.
Hey ho, let's go!
ReplyDeleteI think I saw that old comedian on TV. I specifically remembered that line and how he pulled that joke out. . . But it could be another comedian quoting that comedian. :P
ReplyDelete@ Onan> It's just like that but this time, the fashion shift is much more dramatic. It only takes months (in some cases, weeks, or worse, days) to turn a "Rakista" into "Emo" then from "Emo" to "Jejemon".
It's as if TV dictates what they think and feel about their own bodies and how they should feel about things.
But seriously, I'm finding it too hard to digest that the Jejemon "Fad" catching up.
What used to be considered disgusting is now being copied just because TV sez so. It's just plain stupid.
But hey, I'd like to stress out that there's a difference between Jejemon and plain txtalk.
@ halie, you got that right.
I understand your position. I was into rock even when I was a kid. Too into it that I get irritated back in the "Rap and Hip-Hop" times because I just don't dig it but thought to myself that it's just my opinion so I let them onto their stuff.
The bad part is that when "Rakista Fever" took over, I was ashamed to go out because people might think I'm just like "them". Wahahaha!
